Resources Required - 2008
Rebuilding Together Aurora remodels from 12 to 30 houses each year. To do that, the organization recruits some 500 volunteers and raises $70,000 per year.
Each year Rebuilding Together attempts to select the most worthy projects based on (1) homeowner need, (2) the skills set of each volunteer group and (3) our ability to make a significant impact on the homeowner’s life.
Besides the volunteer resources required, these projects need materials to properly rehabilitate the properties. The projects tend to fall into the following categories and the materials typically needed are:
> Kitchens: cabinets.
> Bathrooms: tubs, vanities, sink tops, medicine chests, toilets, flooring, shower mixing valves, and sink faucets.
> Laundries: laundry sinks.
> Appliances: refrigerators, water heaters, furnaces, dishwashers, garbage disposers, washers, dryers, stoves, and microwave ovens.
> Supply water piping: copper pipe, fittings, valves, sillcocks, faucets, plastic pipe and fittings, rubber boots, etc.
> Electrical: house service panels, small conduit, fittings, boxes, ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, receptacles, switches, and wire.
> Garage: garage door openers.
> Landscape: fencing, topsoil, sod, tree removal and tree pruning, landscaping.
> Walkways and driveways: professionals willing to donate time and materials.
> Roofs: roofing materials and roofing help.
> Carpeting: carpeting materials and installation help.
> Flooring: flooring materials.
> Structural items: 2x4s, miscellaneous 1x stock, ½” plywood, ¾” plywood, screws, and nails.
> Windows: replacement-type and custom made by local manufacturers, combination storm windows and screen units.
> Doors: insulated steel doors and hollow doors faced with plywood, high quality storm doors.
> Hardware: locksets.
> Finishes: drywall, paint, and painting supplies. It must be noted that color is often important to the homeowners; not just any color will do. Most exterior trim is white.
> Tools: scaffolds and specialized equipment. |
